Many women experience water retention without realising it. They find they have discomfort like bloating but don’t quite know why.
What is water retention?
Water retention is quite simply what happens when for one reason or another, the body doesn’t pass out enough fluid through natural processes, like sweating or going to the loo, and stores it instead.
The symptoms can include swollen abdomen, hands and ankles.
What causes water retention?
It is common to experience some water retention around the time of your period due to changes in your hormone levels.
Other causes for water retention can include:
- Too much salt in your diet
- A side effect of using medicines including contraceptive pills
- Lack of exercise
- Long periods of inactivity, like longhaul flights
- Standing for long periods
Spot the signs of water retention:
- Trouble fitting into a favourite pair of jeans
- Swollen ankles
- Shoes rubbing or pinching for no apparent reason
- Swollen hands
- Discomfort from rings and other jewellery
- Bloated tummy
Should I drink less water when I have water retention?
It’s a common misconception that drinking less water will reduce water retention. In fact, the opposite is true. Drinking more water helps the body work efficiently.
Can I avoid water retention?
Making sure you exercise regularly and not eating too much salt are both good ways to help avoid water retention.
